H2S Alive certification
H2S Alive is the Energy Safety Canada standard safety certification required for any worker entering an area where hydrogen sulfide may be present, covering detection, respiratory protection, and emergency response.
What it means in oilfield operations
H2S Alive is the ticket you carry to work anywhere near sour gas in Western Canada. It is an 8-hour instructor-led course administered through Energy Safety Canada. The certification covers four core areas: properties of H2S, personal protective equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus, detection and monitoring, and rescue procedures. It expires every three years. In Alberta and Northeast BC, it is the most commonly required safety ticket for oilfield work after basic safety orientation. If a worker's H2S Alive expires on a Tuesday and they are dispatched to a sour job on Wednesday, the operator at the gate will check and the crew will not be allowed on the lease. The cost is not just the expired cert. It is the truck that drove two hours, the job that sits idle, and the customer who now questions whether your crew management is under control.
How HitchGuardian uses this
HitchGuardian carries each worker's H2S Alive expiry date and checks it against job requirements at the assignment level. When a sour gas job is built, the system verifies that every assigned worker holds a current H2S Alive before the assignment clears. When a cert is approaching expiry, HitchGuardian flags the worker so the coordinator can schedule renewal before it becomes a dispatch problem.
